Where the Wild Things Are

Author and Illustrator: Maurice Sendak

Genre: Fantasy

Major Awards: Caldecott Medal, ALA Notable Children's Books, Lewis Carroll Shelf Award

Grade Level: Pre-K-3

Summary: After Max gets sent to bed without dinner, his imagination starts to transform his bedroom into a forest. He finds himself in a strange place where the Wild Things live. Because of Max's bravery towards the beasts, they named him their king. After having fun with the Wild Things, he, like his mother, sent them to bed without their dinner. Because he craved the familiar love of his mother, Max, ignoring the threats of the Wild Things, got back on his boat and went back to his bedroom. There he found his supper waiting for him.

Evaluation: This book is a must have in the classroom. Its beautiful illustrations and creative storyline are something that is missing from a lot of children's books these days. I will have this on my shelf.

This book is best for pre-k through third because that is when children's imagination are running wild. They will be swept away by the book and into the land of the Wild Things themselves.

I think this book would be a fun one to create a prompt for a writing piece or even to use to have kids get inspiration for drawing or creating their own place to escape to.
